Professor Yousuf Islam's focus at UnaMesa is on the use of SMS (Short Message Service) in distance learning. As he works on gathering data in order to perfect this technique, with the goal of improving educational experiences in Bangladesh, UnaMesa will benefit from his data and be able to pass the lessons he learns on to others interested in instituting similar programs.

Background:
After completing his PhD in 1988, Dr. Islam worked on a World Bank Project where he came across data that professed 90% of all software projects fail in Bangladesh. This depressing finding challenged him to find ways to solve implementation problems of software projects.

While Dean in the Computer Science Department of BRAC University, he pioneered the technique of SMS feedback in education, particularly as it relates to distance learning. Dr. Islam co-authored a paper on this subject in 2006.

After resigning his position at the University, he went on to start Soft-Ed Limited, a company that specializes in professional software and education.

Currently, Dr. Islam is working on implementing the SMS technique via the Bangladesh Virtual Classroom Project.
